Ex. Arcadia collection, Geoffrey Bell Auctions, Toronto Coin Expo Spring Sale 2019, 2 May 2019, lot 372(See text below); Ex. Walter Breen collection.
A - Paris Mint - 1755-A Billon Sous Marques. Vlack 350. Rarity-1. Very Fine, a contemporary counterfeit issue struck in copper, with no trace of silvering on either side (the variety is also known on fully silvered planchets). This is the most commonly-seen of the Sous Marques issues, and by far the most common of the varieties bearing this date – this is interesting because it suggests that the counterfeiters were able to strike more coins from a single die pair than the Paris mint often could! Light brown, the surfaces with a few scattered marks from circulation, but overall attractive. This example came from the Walter Breen collection, and is accompanied by his envelope – a rare pedigree, as Breen didn’t actually collect many coins, though he did have an affinity for this series, and while they were inexpensive he put together a nice little set of rarer date and mintmark combinations, as well as unusual counterfeits such as this.(From Geoffrey Bell Auctions)
