An edict of the King Louis XIV, dated on February 19, 1670, authorized the creation of a special money for the Islands and Continent of America (‘Isles et terres ferme de l’Amerique’). Two silver denominations were to be minted at ‘l’Hostel de la Monnoye de Paris’, the 15 sols along with the 5 sols piece. Both coins bore a specific legend for exclusive circulation in French America: ‘Gloriam Regni Tui Dicent’. They had to be distinctive from regular domestic issues of France, where they were forbidden to use. Their value actually equals a quarter et twelfth ecus respectively. An estimated number of 40,000 pieces were struck, mostly melted thereafter, from which only 18 surviving specimens are known at present day. 8 of them are held in museums and institutional collections, 10 into private hands.

…with an outstanding pedigree !

This coin here has an amazing history of fabulous owners. An exceptional pedigree going back to the 19th century with its first known owner, the Count Ferrari. Born in 1850 at the well-known Hôtel Matignon in Paris, he spent his whole life collecting stamps and coins.

He started as young collector, then he inherited an estimated fortune of 5 millions pounds, giving him a great opportunity to build one of the largest collection of all times ever assembled ! The 15 sols was probably bought in the last quarter of the 19th century, as we are aware of a pewter cast specimen made in the 1880’s from his coin. Ferrari lived in Paris until 1915, then moved to Switzerland to escape the Great War, where he died in 1917. Since he had became citizen of Austria, he left and gave his collection to the Austrian Embassy (Housed at the Hotel Matignon) as he bequeathed it to the German nation to be accessible to the public. ‘After the war, the French government confiscated Ferrary’s collection, claiming it as a war reparation. The massive assemblage was auctioned off between 1921 and 1926, in 14 separate sales. Realizing some 30 million francs.’

Who bought the coin in 1920’s ? Good question… What we know is the next owner being Wayte Raymond (1886-1956), renowned American numismatist, when the coin resurfaced and advertised for sale in his Sept-Oct 1942 issue of Coin Collectors Journal, Vol. IX. Raymond had been a pioneer of American numismatics as he published many numismatic books and catalogs, among which his Standard Catalog, considered as the first coin guide of that time.

Then, at his death in 1956, it appears that Art Kagin acquired the coin around that period. In 1964, the coin was put in auction at the ANA 73rd Convention’s Federal Brand Sale in Cleveland, held by M. Kolman auctioneer, (summer 1964, Lot #1500). Prominent Canadian numismatist John McKay-Clements purchased it (through J. According Partrick’s ticket accompanying the coin, we can presume that John J. Ford (1924-2005) had purchased it in 1976. Since Ford had apparently bought the specimen pedigreed to ‘Archbishop John Sharp collection’ (1691-1714) at Baldwin Sale in 1973, he owned then two 15 sols pieces with the oldest and most prestigious pedigrees !
